The Power of the Housewife Vote

Until Sarah Palin’s run for Vice President the housewife was considered ‘a joke’ in the political arena. Now the media and the public see the power of the ‘soccer/hockey mom.’ And we are not going to take what is going on in America anymore. It’s the moms, the mother, the mamma bear, who is going to save the family, and save this country, for the sake of her babies.

It is the housewives who hold more than 90% of the household spending power.

Let’s show corporate and political America who is really running the show. And it’s us ladies.

What we want!

To shut our borders
We cannot afford to pay for illegals

Bring back our companies
We must manufacture and put our men to work

Fix our schools, food, air, roads,
Our children need to learn, eat good food, breathe fresh air, and we moms need to drive on safe roads

Get the smut out of the media
We want the airwaves cleaned up

Severe punishment for people who hurt children
We must better protect our babies from pedophiles

Severe punishment for men who hurt women
We must enact a family protection act to help wives defend themselves from abusive husbands

Help for families in need
WIC, welfare, and food stamps must remain as an emergency program for mothers and children

Power for the parent
We do not want to be forced to vaccinate our children

We need affordable care that is not controlled by the pharmaceuticals and insurance companies

The Achilles Heel of Our Democracy?

The most compelling virtue of the FairTax, the national retail sales tax designed to replace the income tax system, may be that it turns every consumer in the United States into a stakeholder who will finally pressure politicians to limit spending.

Advocates for the legislation–which Washington loves to hate–rail against the destructive effects and unfair application of the income tax system. They point to trillions of dollars of private investment that are expected to flow into the United States with elimination of corporate and capital gains taxes. They love the idea of illegal immigrants and the entire underground economy joining the tax base. And they like the idea of a simple, visible tax on consumption that makes April 15th just another day and which frees desperately needed economic activity from the destructive effects of taxes.

But it is the medicine for the Achilles Heel of our democracy that may prove the most compelling strength of the FairTax. Thomas Jefferson and others warned that when, in a democracy, the public discovers that it can vote itself wealth from the public treasury, self-government may destroy the economic foundation of the nation. Many would argue that cynically ambitious candidates and elected officials have been buying votes with the public treasury for years.

Under the FairTax, every retail purchase of new goods and services is subject to federal taxation. The tax paid at the cash register is visible, unlike taxes that are now hidden in payroll withholding and embedded within the price of goods and services. If, for example, our leaders decide that colonization of the moon requires increasing the tax rate from the proposed 23% to 25% on all purchases, every consumer might want a word about that. Today, by contrast, massive spending for entitlements, stimulus projects, pet projects and every other government program seem like “free money” to a lot of voters. One need only look at the courting of the powerful senior citizen’s block of voters, or the growth of “earmarks” to understand the siren song of such promises both to elected officials and to the body politic.

The effect is destructive as politicians from both parties have taken us down a path of unsustainable spending. Some economists, like Larry Kotlikoff of Boston University, cite current and obligated future government debt at the local, state and federal level as so large that it threatens the “full faith and credit” of the United States. Others wonder if we are approaching the point when foreign creditors no longer believe that we can ever satisfy such debt—the definition of national bankruptcy.

Our collective answer to such worries has been to spend more by borrowing more from foreign creditors—both to assuage public fears and to address real problems. We are now spending the earnings of our children and grandchildren on both the challenges of a modern society and the politically popular wishes of entrenched interest groups across the political spectrum. The other answer from national leaders has been to collect less by legislating tax cuts. If we were not already in such deep debt, the debate between the two sides might make sense and a rational middle ground might be achieved. But with more than $11 trillion of national debt and another $40-60 trillion of debt at the state and local level, this argument begins to look a lot like ideologues endlessly arguing over whether to bake bread or grow wheat while standing in the middle of a long-parched desert.

Last year we borrowed about $160 billion from foreign lenders to send stimulus checks to taxpayers to spark consumption here. In the months leading up to April 15th, however, Americans paradoxically spent an estimated $300 billion on tax preparation costs. The FairTax eliminates those costs, spurs $10-15 trillion of private investment into our economy and makes clear to every American that every promise is paid for with the earning of ourselves, our children and their children.

In this, the FairTax may prove not to just be a better national tax system but the best way to save both our economy and our democracy.

I’ve been very involved locally regarding some issues our school district having. It’s been a real fight. I’ve learned a lot along the way. I discovered that I can be a force to be reckoned with. The powers that be are constantly being dismissive, I feel, because I’m “just a housewife”. I’m sick of it! We need some type of orgnization to rally to. We are intelligent, articulate, and a powerhouse politically, but we have no central base with which to work from. I’ve only recently become aware of this “housewife army” and I’m ready to roll! I’ve already been fighting for the children and taxpayers in my community and I want my voice heard on a wider scale. Let’s show our leaders the direction our nation needs to be heading in!

If you are unhappy with healthcare controlled by insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies, why do you think the federal government will be any better?

How well do they run anything? How well do they run the Veterans’ healthcare? How well have they run Social Security? Medicare and Medicaid? These programs are all a mess and/or going bankrupt. Our federal government is going bankrupt as it is. (Google David Walker Peterson Foundation for discussions of our $45 Trillion of unfunded current obligations.) It is a pipe dream to assume that if the federal government just took over our healthcare system that suddenly all our problems would be solved. If you doubt this, please carefully investigate healthcare in other countries where it has been socialized such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Healthcare that is socialized is rationed. Fewer people will get quality and timely care than do under our current system. Please do not let your current frustration lead us all to an untenable solution.
